ABOUT PHOTO ENCAUSTIC

The word encaustic originates from the Greek word enkaustikos which means to burn in.  Heat is necessary for a painting to be called encaustic.  The wax encaustic painting technique was described by the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder from the 1st Century AD.  The oldest surviving encaustic panel paintings are the Romano-Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 100–300 AD.  (Source: Wikipedia)

Photo encaustic employs hot beeswax plus photography.

In one technique, an inkjet photo print is applied to a board (usually birch or basswood.)  Wax layers are then added on top.  Each layer must be fused with a heat gun or torch.  This encapsulates the image again and again, making it impervious to moisture and 100% archival.  The wax can be etched, or incised, with paint or other media (such as graphite) filled into the incisions.  Oil paints can be added for color and many other methods can be used to enhance a piece.

Another technique is to print on archival tissue paper using an ink jet printer, then apply that image and encapsulate it to the layers of wax.  This allows for more creativity, as several photos can be used and layers of tissue can be placed on top of each other.  For a large tissue-photo encaustic, a photo can be printed in manageable sizes (such as 8x10) and then tiled together.  The tissue method creates an ethereal look, as the tissue appears to melt into the wax, and light or white areas of a tissue-photo disappear into the wax layer.  Again, layers of wax are applied and each layer fused with heat.

Yet another technique is to “transfer” an inkjet photo to wax layers.  The photo is printed in reverse, then the photo paper is transferred (rubbed into) the wax using a tool.  Water is then applied to rub off the photo paper.  The result is more etheral than the tissue option.

Each photo encaustic is its own creation ... no two pieces are the alike.  Methods of enhancing a photo encaustic are limitless.

So when you acquire a photo encaustic art piece, it is truly one of a kind.
